Amboseli National Park in Kenya is undoubtedly one of the best places in Africa to witness and photograph African elephants in their natural habitat.
World-renowned for its elephant population, Amboseli is the home of some of Africa’s last remaining “big tuskers”—elephants with enormous ivory tusks that reach the ground.
These magnificent animals are the primary focus of my photo safari there, and few places in the world allow photographers to capture elephants in such vast, open landscapes. They move gracefully across the open plains, creating one of the most iconic wildlife photography scenes in the world.
It really is an experience of a lifetime to witness these elephant families roaming in the wild. And, take my word for it, the elephants of Amboseli can present a near-infinite myriad of possibilities for pictures if you look long enough.
A unique landscape for elephant photography
Located in the Loitoktok District, within the Rift Valley Province, Amboseli National Park in Kenya is one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife destinations.
The park sits within a vast 8,000-square-kilometre ecosystem that extends across the Kenya-Tanzania border and against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak. It is a breathtaking setting for wildlife photography.
Amboseli’s landscapes have been shaped by extreme weather patterns over the decades. In the early 1990s, relentless rains transformed the region into a swamp, only for drought to later turn its once lush grasslands into arid dust plains.
These environmental shifts have created a diverse and ever-changing backdrop, making Amboseli an incredible place to photograph wildlife in varied conditions.
Beyond elephants: Other wildlife in Amboseli National Park, Kenya
While elephants are the main attraction, Amboseli is also home to an impressive variety of wildlife, offering photographers a wealth of subjects to capture:
Big Cats: Lions roam the park, often seen resting in the shade or stalking prey
Gerenuk: This unique, long-necked antelope is often spotted standing on its hind legs to reach high branches.
Other iconic wildlife: Amboseli National Park is also home to large populations of zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, and various antelope species, all providing excellent photographic opportunities.
Birdlife: Amboseli is also a paradise for bird photographers, with species such as African fish eagles, flamingos, and secretary birds frequently seen.
Crowd-free elephant encounters
