Sandman
Maasai Mara Kenya 2014
An edition of 25 in all sizes
Sandman represents the near perfect lion portrait. The lens aperture was stopped down to render every detail in focus. The camera's large 36mp sensor and its uncropped final image file means that this image retains the detail and crispness as if you were standing right before him. He can be effortlessly reproduced to large print sizes with virtually no loss of detail. Sandman was the clear choice for the cover of my book As Long As There Are Animals.
We found him one morning near the Sand River in Kenya's Maasai Mara. He was unknown at the time, having crossed over from the nearby Tanzanian border with his brother. The name Sandman was my own gift to him, after the river, and he is still identified by that today, if and whenever he is on the right side of the border.
