Maramania
Maasai Mara Kenya 2010
An edition of 75 in all sizes
The 1.5 million strong wildebeest migration has long been acknowledged as one of the seven wonders of the natural world. Nothing else on Earth can compare with the sight and sound of thousands of animals meeting a river with one singular objective in mind, to get to the other side at all costs. It's an endless journey that runs on loop year after year.
In Maramania that drama is captured in full detail at one established difficult passage, the Mara River itself, along with all the dangers it contains, from the hesitancy of their entry, the scrambling disorder of their exit, with their frantic battles against river currents in between.
This crossing lasted two hours with more than ten thousand animals making their way across. The camera was low down on the river's edge, the wildebeest exiting a few feet away. A 70mm focal length was all that was needed to result in an immersive picture capturing all three points of the drama, the entry, the crossing, and the exit.
