Neck and Neck
Maasai Mara Kenya 2013
An edition of 25 in all sizes
Neck and Neck was taken in April 2013. Giraffes are typically difficult to photograph with much aesthetic reward as they are large – attempts to get them in frame can often mean unattractive and distracting backgrounds. One answer is to get close to minimalise the background. Overcast days go well with giraffes because closing in and isolating detail with a blank sky can result in accentuated pattern, line and shape. Because giraffes are instantly recognisable no matter how you chose to photograph them, you don't need the whole subject in frame for a picture.
Pattern line and shape with minimalism is a good mix for framed wall art and this picture contains all of those attributes. And a black and white treatment makes it more so.
