The Power of the Matriarch
Maasai Mara Kenya 2015
An edition of 10 in all sizes
The Power of the Matriarch was awarded in the 2017 edition of Wildlife Photographer of the Year and chosen as the lead marketing image of that year’s media campaign.
The Power of the Matriarch is offered in the minimum size of 100 centimetres, because anything less would curtail the power punch of the picture, and by extension of the elephant herself. A camera with a large sensor was used and the image is not cropped which means every fine detail is preserved – every crevice and hair is on full view.
To anyone who loves texture, this photograph is a gift. At just a few metres away, we could see all the qualities of the different parts of their bodies, the deep ridges of their trunks, the mud-caked ears and the patina of dried dirt on their tusks. The family ambled by in near silence, peaceful and relaxed. The leading female, probably the matriarch, looked straight at us, her eye a glowing amber dot in the heavy folds of skin around her eye. Her gaze was full of respect and intelligence – the very essence of sentience.
It is limited to a run of ten in all sizes, each one numbered and signed. It will be no longer be available once the ten editions have sold.
